Please read this page first then take a look at our current Audition Schedule.

CONFLICTS:

Knowing your schedule prior to auditioning for a show is very important. Think about birthdays, special occasions, work schedules, vacation days, family outings or anything that will prevent you from attending rehearsals and/or performances. Chico Cabaret does not have understudies so attending all performances is crucial. Missing a few rehearsals is not generally problematic, as long as it's arranged beforehand with the director. Surprises and unexpected absences, however, can greatly impact the production, and your relationship with the theatre.

THE MUSICAL AUDITION:

Unless otherwise noted on the audition announcement, bring sheet music for our piano accompanist. Prepare a portion of the song (generally 16 bars or about 1 minute) that best represents your singing ability. If we do not have a piano accompanist, a karaoke CD is the next best alternative. We would prefer that you choose a song in a similar style of the musical you are auditioning for. For example, if it’s a rock opera, you may choose something from Jesus Christ Superstar. Never bring a song from the show itself. Many people worry about an audition because they don’t have the “right song.” If this is the case, bring sheet music to ANY song that you can memorize and sing well; rock, soul, pop, whatever. Singing any song well is the most essential part of the audition.

Important Note: Singing a cappella (without instrumental back up) is generally not a good alternative. Not bringing a song, not memorizing your song, or trying to think up a song on-the-spot is unacceptable. If you are truly stuck, call the theatre for some help.

THE DANCE AUDITION:

If the musical requires dancing, the choreographer will teach you basic dance steps during the audition process. The choreographer will work with you in small groups. When ready, you will perform in front of the director in a small group format. This is not something you can prepare for and we expect mistakes. Do your best, relax, and try to enjoy the process.

THE NON-MUSICAL AUDITION:

Unless otherwise noted on the audition announcement, no preparation is needed for this audition. Scenes will be provided and you will read with a partner or group. Usually, you will be given time to look it over before presenting it in front of the other participants and the director.

WHAT TO WEAR:

Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Jackets, ties and dresses look nice but do not allow a full range of movement.

CAN’T MAKE THE AUDITION?

We will do our best to accommodate you (if you cannot attend the scheduled audition) but there are no guarantees. Private auditions are not always an option due to time constraints or rescheduling with our musical directors and/or choreographers.

AND FINALLY ...

If you have additional questions, please feel free to call us prior to the audition. You will find the Chico Cabaret directors to be very supportive. We don’t want this process to be stressful. We want you to have fun and enjoy the experience.
