A THEATRE ON THE INSIDE-OUT Began in 1990. It was originally developed to provide local teens the opportunity to write & perform powerful stories & original scripts for the purpose of prevention, education & outreach to schools and community. It was meant as a creative and effective way to get teens talking with teens, while blending the best of realism and art. Our mission is to help create greater awareness and dialogue solutions toward decreased violence, teen suicide, substance abuse & many other issues in our schools & neighborhoods. Since 1990, our troupe has performed at junior & high schools in Chico, Paradise, Red Bluff, Redding & Willows. We have performed at several professional workshops, Friday Night Live events in Chico & Sacramento, and other venues. With our new facility located inside the Chico Cabaret, we have expanded our programs to Include traditional children’s theatre, musicals, and comedies for young children and teens. The theatre also provides workshops, drama therapy groups, and will continue to develop original works by local teens. A Theatre On The Inside-Out is part of Community Collaborative for Youth, a newly formed non-profit (501 C3) organization. Programs For Children

Ages 7-12

To us, live theatre is a dynamic & ultimately fun and exciting way to build self-confidence, esteem & social skills. We stress the importance of team work, cooperation & respect. We insist that children aren’t just here to “play”, but rather to learn how to focus their natural talents and to create strong friendships as well as truthful characters. Since acquiring our new space at the Chico Cabaret, A Theatre On The Inside-Out has expanded to include a variety of children’s productions. Within our first year, we performed over 7 productions including the classics such as Little Red Riding Hood, Robin Hood and Pinocchio. In addition to the classics, we hope to provide student actors a well-rounded theatrical experience, including musical theatre, comedies, & even original works. PARENTS & CHILDREN TOGETHER At other times, we have opportunities for PARENTS (or other significant adults) to participate WITH their children ON STAGE. This experience is important, as much as it is fun! Participating in a live theatre project together creates memories that will last a lifetime!

Voices...

...was written by 20 local teens during the summer of 2001. Our mission was to write a play about alcohol abuse for Red Ribbon Week. Rather than choosing lecture-style or scare-tactics, the youth authors choose to depict a family struggling with alcoholism. The story follows a 16 year old high school student, Elise. Within minutes of the plays opening, we learn that Elise’s father was a “high school jock” and “never grew up”. He’s a raging alcoholic, while Elise’s mother is co-dependent. Mom uses work to emotionally distance herself, and thrusts her parental responsibilities onto Elise. Elise becomes tormented & teased at school. She has one friend Melissa, of whom she entrusts with her deepest secrets. After Melissa becomes interested in a boy, her attention is diverted away from Elise and feelings of betrayal & hurt erupt into tragedy at school. Voices is a beginning toward creating understanding, acceptance and compassion in others. After the performance, the teen cast & director engages the audience in dialogue. The play is powerful, has some strong language that can be cut if the school desires. We would gladly provide you with a copy of the script to preview.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO OUR AUDIENCES

(the following message is present in our program and during our dialogue with audiences) We have a responsibility to you, our youth audience. The show you are about to see is a powerful depiction of real life events. The experiences and feelings are real, whether we choose to recognize them or not. We hope that all of our audience members will utilize the plays’ message wisely by becoming aware of the feelings inside. If the feelings become too , as they intense, as they sometimes do, please do not hesitate to seek the council and support of a trained counselor at school, or in your community. See also our list of local & national crisis phone numbers. Below is a list of many of them. We thank you. (list will be provided to students in our program)

Programs For Teens: Ages 12-19 +

Beyond the touring group, we also offer the older youth an opportunity to experience live theatre. The same philosophical approach with children is used with teens, including cooperation, and team work, however, we also expect a greater focus, discipline and energy. We also offer teens the opportunity to involve themselves in other aspects of theatre, including lights & sound, stage design, make-up, stage managing and other aspects of theatre. In addition to their participation either on stage or behind the scenes, we also are putting together a TEEN BOARD OF DIRECTORS. The teen board will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including reading and recommending plays & musicals, organizing work parties, & working with the media, including the writing of PSA’s for radio, television and newspaper. Eventually, we’d love to invite teens who feel they have a knack for directing! If you have a teen interested in any aspect of our theatre program, please have them call us.

Program Costs: $90.00

Typically, we charge a fee to help defray the cost of production such as costumes, theatre props, royalties (the right to perform the show), make-up and teaching fees. Two Or More Children. If a family has more than one child wishing to participate, the second or third child will be 50% off. SCHOLARSHIPS: We value the importance of your child's’ participation in live theatre productions but understand tight budgets. Therefore, we do offer a limited number of full & partial scholarships to families. In exchange , we ask that family members volunteer their time, performing tasks in lieu of payment. Parents, older siblings, aunts, uncles are all welcome to come on out to help. It can actually be fun!

Donations & Volunteers:

A Theatre On The Inside-Out is part of a larger non-profit (501C3) organization called The Community Collaborative For Youth (CCY) Since there is a great necessity in offering scholarships to youth & families in need, we are always seeking tax deductible cash donations to assist us in providing theatre scholarships. In addition to cash donations, other donations such as tools, paint, brushes, lumber, nails, screws, office supplies, and other things are always welcome. Please call us if you think you may have something we can use. Summer Programs: In the summer of 2002, the theatre offered a Hobbit Workshop. The workshop involved theatre skill building activities including sword play, stage combat, basic acting &improvisation skills, dance & music development . The workshop was designed as a preparation for an all-age main stage production of The Hobbit at the Cabaret in September, 2002. This exemplifies the types of activity that we hope to continue to provide youth ages 7-17 years . Call us in early May for information about our summer programs.
